Weekend Links / / Happy 2016

A look back at 2015

Happy first Friday of 2016! How did you ring in the New Year? Most years together, Jordan and I have been at house parties but this year we went to a legit NYE party in Nashville. Jordan’s co-working space hosted an event with around 650 attendees. It was full of energy and excitement and I’m still recovering. I’m not usually up that late! I’m off today and I’m looking forward to not doing much of anything. Haha.

It’s always a bit hard for me to believe a new year has begun. 2015 was a good year for Jordan and I, not without its challenges, but we faced them together and for me that’s what matters.

Instead of my usual Weekend Links formula, today, I’m looking back on a few of my favorite posts from last year.

Styled | Mad for Plaid

Styled | Mad for Plaid

It’s been unseasonably warm here in Nashville or at least unseasonably warm for this midwesterner. I’ve worn a legit winter coat maybe twice and this past weekend was in the 70s. Living in Chicago for most of my life meant my winter time outfits barely got noticed underneath all of my layers. If I was simply running a quick Target errand there almost wasn’t any need to get dressed. Anything could work: “Just throw a coat on it!”

Despite the temperate weather I’m gravitating towards warmer colors and neutral patterns. After streamlining my closet, I don’t have a lot of color and pattern, except for plaid. So much plaid!

Around These (Short) Parts

ashortblonde - Christmas Tree Lot

Hey. I feel like it’s been a hot minute since I’ve sat down to write. I find it hard to consistently blog in December, so I allowed myself the grace to just not. 😉 Instead, I’ve been reading, working on projects, listening to the second season of Serial, eating far too many cookies, buying Christmas presents and taking an obscene amount of trips to the post office. Oh, and working. I’m looking forward to January when retail holiday season is over and things quiet down.

What is Your Thing + The 1975

The 1975

Jordan and I recently took a quick trip to Kansas City…if an eight hour drive can be quick. 😉 In November, Jordan found out about this special holiday show with Wolf Alice, BØRNS and The 1975 put on by 96.5 The Buzz, a KC radio station. We’ve tried seeing The 1975 on their last two tours but missed them (we were in the process of moving) and they haven’t played in Nashville yet! So… a couple of months ago, I get a text from Jordan asking if I wanted to drive all the way to Kansas City to see The 1975.

Jordan and I don’t stick to super rigid traditions or even routines. I think this is partly due to personality but also because our jobs allot for flexibility. In marriage, I believe it’s important to share something together that takes you away from your home: camping or hiking, taking cooking classes, visiting museums or seeing a baseball game in every stadium. These outings are bonding experiences and they don’t always need to require vacation time.

Spotlight | LaCroixs Over Boys

Chelsea Steele | LaCroixs Over Boys

WELD is the co-working space Jordan works out of in Nashville. He feels like it’s been the best decision of his career since making the initial leap to self-employment. WELD is a special place where people can work in a community of like-minded people. It combines the best parts about having co-workers without having to actually rely on them to get projects done! 😉 Not only are WELDer’s supportive of each other, but they are welcoming to their families and friends. It’s really beautiful.

Jordan affectionately calls Chelsea Steele the “Queen of the Interns” at WELD. Jordan and Chelsea bonded quickly over their mutual love of alt comedy and the city of London. One evening, Jordan returned home and told me about “Lacroixs Over Boys,” a phrase Chelsea had put on a t-shirt, and how LaCroix picked it up. Suddenly she got featured on Bloomberg Business, Business Insider and BuzzFeed. I needed to know more.

A Night Of Holiday Style

A Night of Holiday Style | Fruition Salon Nashville

A few months ago Fruition Salon reached out to myself and Moriah Murrell to host a holiday themed blogger night. I immediately said yes and began helping to plan this festive night of holiday style. We all wanted this evening to be fun but also informative. If you’re like me, you spend the majority of your time selecting an outfit for a holiday party but throw your hair in a topknot because you really have no idea how to style it. Haha. This event was about to change all that.

Nashville | Pinewood Social

Pinewood Social in Nashville

I have never experienced a place quite like Pinewood Social. It was one of the first places I frequented once Jordan and I moved to town. A friend invited me for coffee and breakfast and I was instantly smitten. Their food is excellent and the coffee and pastries are outsourced from a local roaster, Crema Coffee.

Pinewood Social is an experience all its own: part restaurant, part bar, part bowling alley and part public swimming pool. Yes, it sounds a bit crazy and eclectic because it is… in only the best way possible! Reservations to bowl are suggested (bowling is $40/hour for one lane) but the pool is first come first serve. Jordan and I can’t get enough of this place.

Weekend links / / A Tucked Away Tree

Christmas Walk

Transitioning back to real life after spending all last week with family has been difficult. I still have barely begun Christmas shopping (yay for Amazon Prime!) and our tree is still tucked away in our storage unit. Let’s hope it gets put up before the week is over! Haha.

Potbelly, a sandwich shop from Chicago, opened in Nashville this fall and I finally went this week. I haven’t been very strict on eating gluten and dairy-free as of late because sometimes it’s worth splurging for a piece of home.

Onto the links!

Potato Kugel / / I love how in the ever changing world of blogging, Deb’s site literally has not changed in years. Her space is not flashy but her recipes are spot on. These “lazy latkas” as Deb coins them, would be accomplished much easier if I had a box grater. I think I’ll try anyway.

NYC On a Budget / / AirBnB for the win!

7 Things To Do This Holiday Season in Chicago / / I don’t really miss the length of Chicago winters, but I miss Christmastime in Chicago. The fun activities can distract you from the cold if you choose to brave it and get out of the house!!

Stocking Stuffers / / Even better this list includes gifts under $10!

Brooklyn / / For the past several years my siblings and I have gone to see a movie Thanksgiving  weekend. This year we opted out of Hunger Games and James Bond for Brooklyn. It’s one of the best movies I’ve seen in a long while and I highly recommend you seek it out!

Here is a brief synopsis: “An Irish immigrant lands in 1950s Brooklyn, where she quickly falls into a new romance. When her past catches up with her, however, she must choose between two countries and the lives that exist within.”

You have until Sunday to enter the joint giveaway presented by Vernacular Podcast and myself! Did you listen to their latest episode? I’m on discussing my gift guide.

Happy Weekend, all!

Styled | Printed Skirts

Styled | Printed Skirts

While editing down my closet, I realized I prefer patterns on my lower half (skirts and pants) instead of patterned tops (plaid shirts are my exception). My friend’s son has recently been requesting to wear camo pants like “Aunty Caphrine” because he saw me wearing mine. Haha!

There is something fun and flirty about a printed skirt. When my friend, Greta, who owns the Five Sparrows Boutique, allowed me to select a few pieces from to photograph, I immediately was drawn to this burgundy skirt with elephants on it. Do yourself a favor and order something fun from her shop!

Holiday Gift Guide | Him & Her

Holiday Gift Guide

The holiday season is full of everything I love: romantic moments, great music, fun-filled movies, amazing food and lots of time with friends and family. Unfortunately, the art of gift buying (and dealing with parking and lines at the mall) can add a lot of unneeded stress to our lives. Over the years I have gotten better about paying attention to stores and certain items I know will make a great gift throughout the year. This way once Christmastime comes, at least I have a vague starting point.

I hope my list gives you some great ideas!
