Weekend Links / / Lemonade and Girl Bosses

California Palm Tree

Jordan and I have entered the last leg of our California road trip. These past few weeks have been beautiful, relaxing, and tiring all neatly bundled together. Every night we crawl into bed, happily exhausted, and transfer photo after photo onto Jordan’s computer, but without the time to really dive in and review everything we’ve captured. That’ll have to wait until we get home. I’m very excited to relive this trip over and over again!

I haven’t had a lot of time to read blogs, but thanks to Bloglovin’ I have a nice collection saved for when we get home. I have managed to stay current with the most important news of the week…Beyoncé’s Lemonade. Are you loving it?

Onto the links!

Five Trader Joe’s Meals / / Even as someone who does the majority of their weekly grocery shopping at TJ’s I still find myself missing out on some of their different offerings. I like hearing what others consider to be their essentials. Have you tried TJ’s Peanut Butter? It’s just peanuts and oil (salted or unsalted). I love it.

What We Want You To Know About Infertility / / In honor of National Infertility Awareness Week, Caroline asked several bloggers to share what they wanted people to know about infertility. I found myself nodding yes to everyone’s comments. What I would add is “relaxing” and being diligent about finding good care/doctors are not separate entities.

Would You Call Someone a Girl Boss? / / While scrolling through my feed, this article from Cup of Jo immediately caught my eye. I read Sophia Amoruso’s book, #GIRLBOSS and enjoyed it, though I never completely related. I don’t fault Sophia and her editors for coming up with the term because it’s extremely catchy and created an important conversation, but I also found myself questioning the implication behind calling your female boss, girl boss.

“But the more I think about it, the more I find the term “girl boss” grating. It seems fine until you try it with any number of women. Is Oprah a girl boss? Is Hillary a girl boss? Is Sheryl Sandberg a girl boss? Is Tina Fey a girl boss? Is Ruth Bader Ginsburg a girl boss? It sounds absurd.”

The Postpartum Body / / Kristel recently gave birth for the third time, but this go around it was for a surrogate family. As someone who struggled with infertility, keeping up with her story was extremely moving. Growing a human is hard work but to do all of that for someone else, what a selfless act! Kristel shared her honest feelings about the postpartum body when you don’t have a baby to explain the evidence.

DIY Chipotle Chicken Burrito Bowls / / Jordan and I usually save eating out for social gatherings, but every once in awhile when we have a hankering for Chipotle we give in. I’m excited to make Monique’s version of their corn salsa.

Happy Weekend, all!

  1. I actually haven’t heard Beyonce’s new song yet. I guess I need to get on it. I love the DIY Chipotle chicken burrito bowls. Going to have to try them!

  2. Have to say that I am unlikely to hear Beyonce’s new song unless it’s playing in a store when I walk in…or click the link. Which I should do. But I’m not a Beyonce fan…

I’m so glad that I’m not the only one who feels icky using the term #girlboss. Sure, I’ve slapped it in amongst other hashtags on Insta just to try and get stuff out there but honestly I’ve felt like I’m ridiculing the entire entrepreneurial female world, so I’ve dropped it.

To all those who shared their wisdom about their infertility, thank you for your honesty. Without wanting to sound condescending, to me you are all wonderwomen. I truly hope and pray for your little sticky to bless you soon <3

I think I'll have to come back and read about Kristel's journey once Spot is here. I am not sure I'm in the right mindset right now to read what it would be like to be going through that postpartum experience without the baby. But definitely something I do want to read.

Mmmm now all I want is chipotle anything!
And, as an Aussie who's never been to America, can you tell me about Trader Joe's? Is it just a supermarket?

    1. I’ve become more of a Beyonce fan since her last album. I loved Destiny’s Child as a teenager but wasn’t all that impressed with her solo stuff afterwards.

And thank you for your kind words in regards to infertility 😉

Trader Joe’s is a grocery store that started in California. They mainly sell their own independent brands (so when it comes time to choose peanut butter you really only have one option), with a focus on limited ingredients (i.e. all of their TJ’s labels are without hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup etc. As you are probably aware, the US is a bit behind on what they allow in their processed food). More than their food options is the customer service experience. Everyone is nice and friendly and willing to help you with anything you need.
