Jordan and I have had our fair share of interesting Valentine’s Days together. Some of which included car wrecks, mono and stomach bugs. Thankfully, most of the 11 Valentine’s we’ve spent as a couple have been amazing and don’t involve doctors! For many years our go-to dates centered around Chicagoland with delicious bowls of pasta and tiramisu filling our bellies.
This year we kept our day simple with coffee and cream cheese.
While driving around our neighborhood a few weeks ago, a sign for a new restaurant called Proper Bagel stuck out to me. I immediately made a mental note to visit once it opened. Flash forward to Valentine’s Day week and Jordan and I were battling a cold, so a low-key day was on the docket. Instead of going out to dinner we thought Valentine’s Day would be the perfect time to eat at Proper Bagel.
One little known fact about me is that I LOVE bagel sandwiches. Bagels were a staple in our house growing up and I regularly made sandwiches from them. My standard involved turkey or ham, cheese, a light layer of cream cheese and a fried egg. Avocado and spinach are also great additions. All of this was preferably placed on an “everything” or sesame bagel. I just knew Proper Bagel would be my jam.
Proper Bagel is set-up like a New York deli where bagels are bought by the dozen, pastrami and Ruben sandwiches are featured lunch items, and speciality items such as Waldorf salad are sold by the pound. There isn’t anything else like it in town!
Our breakfast sandwiches came with a side (we both chose salads) and we quickly devoured our meals. I can’t wait to go back and try their lunch menu.
^ I’m going back this week to buy a tub of their nutella peanut butter cream cheese!
^ Besides our bagel sandwiches we purchased a few pastries to try including one of their black & white cookies. I developed a fondness for these beauties while visiting NYC and was excited to see them sold here!
