Netflix | Little Gems

Netflix | Little Gems (shows you might have missed)

The number of options on Netflix can be extremely daunting. Jordan and I go through phases where we are watching a lot of movies, but lately we’ve been using Netflix to watch television shows. We really enjoy marathoning a show or even re-watching an entire series like we’ve done with Gilmore Girls a few times. 🙂 If you’ve already finished such great television shows as Friends, Gilmore Girls, How I Met Your Mother, Parenthood, House Of Cards, and Friday Night Lights, here are a few shows you might have missed!

Call The Midwife | Currently in its fourth season, this BBC/PBS show follows several young midwives and nuns in the 1950s from the East End of London navigating their way through baby deliveries, love, loss and friendship. You’ll laugh and cry. It’s a beautiful show.

Freaks and Geeks | If you haven’t watched Freaks and Geeks yet, you’re almost certainly aware of most (if not all) of the main cast (James Franco, Busy Philipps, Jason Segal, Seth Rogan). Judd Apatow, and maybe more accurately his casting agent, scored with this ensemble. This coming-of-age dramedy centers around a sister/brother duo and their friend groups while they deal with the travails of high school. Shenanigans!

Top of The Lake | In high school, I went through a horror/scary movie phase: The Ring, The Others etc. I don’t really like watching anything scary now (Age has made me jumpy? Haha!), but I do enjoy suspense stories. Top of The Lake is a New Zealand/BBC television miniseries that aired on the Sundance channel in the US in 2013. It was recently announced that it would return for another season, which I think is directly related to its success. Elizabeth Moss (of Mad Men fame) plays Det. Robin Griffin, a Sydney police inspector, who returns home to New Zealand to visit her mother who has cancer and gets sucked into a mysterious case of the disappearance of a pregnant teenager.

Rectify | I am so thankful Netflix picked up current running television shows for those of us who don’t have cable. I began watching Rectify last summer. It is the story of Daniel Holden who at 16 years-old was convicted of the murder of his 16-year-old girlfriend. “After spending 19 years on death row, new DNA evidence vacates his original trial, and he returns to his hometown: Paulie, Georgia (source).” It is a slow burn show and even after two seasons, you still don’t exactly know what really happened the night of the murder. It’s gripping.

Land Girls | I’m only a few episodes into Land Girls, but so far I really enjoy it. I love BBC shows and their short seasons. If you like Call the Midwife or Downton Abbey, you’ll like Land Girls, which was actually the BBCs first period drama. During WWI and WWII in Britain, American, and Australia there was a call for women to join the Land Army to work in agriculture, replacing all of the men who were fighting. The show follows a group of women who went to work on the land of a manor.

What shows are you watching on Netflix? I am interested in checking out Bloodline, Penny Dreadful, and watching a bit more of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

    1. I do the same thing! I think I’m on my fourth repetition of both Gilmore Girls and Friends. Which isn’t the worst thing, but it’s nice to change it up. 🙂 Can’t wait to check out Freaks and Geeks — I had no idea there were so many great names in that show!

  1. Call the midwife is great! I periodically check Netflix to see if some of my faves from England have made it over yet 🙂 still waiting on Gavin & Stacy !

Despite the name ( which is crude and awwwwful!) Scrotal Recall is actually brilliant. The best friend character is so London and hilarious and the acting, like many British shows, are great.

I ejoyed Kimmy Schmidt, and just starred Frankie & Grace which has Jane fonda, Martin Sheen, lily tomlin, a great established set of actors. Started a little slow but it’s picking up in the 3rd ep.

I have a few in my list based on other recs that I haven’t tried yet so not sure how they’ll be but I did hear good things: Life (with Damien Lewis), Bomb Girls, and Damages w Glenn Close…

    1. Ohh yeah, I remember hearing about Life. I love Damien Lewis. I think I’ve also heard about Gavin & Stacey. My friends really enjoyed MI5 but they took that off of netflix so I’ll have to see if our library has it.

  2. I love Freaks and Geeks. I actually have it on DVD, before Netflix came around. Such a great show and I love that Jude Aptow is the creator!

PS – If I click “leave a reply” it goes to a 404 error.

    1. Thank you for letting me know Lauren! I had the wrong link. Whoops! We own a lot of television shows on DVD. I love letting friends borrow different shows I love.

  3. My husband and I have been looking for a new show to binge watch but can’t ever settled on one. Rectify sounds really good! Have you watched scandal or revenge? Those were a couple of our faves!

    1. I haven’t heard of Daredevil. Netflix seems to be coming out with their own shows at a rapid pace and I’m missing them! Kimmy Schmidtt is quirky and probably not a show I’d keep up with week to week, but it’s the kind of show to put on while cleaning or organizing and you want to be distracted for a few hours.

  4. hi girl! thanks so much for sharing these- once we finish parenthood {on episode five} i can’t wait to check these out!!! love your space- so much! and hope you’re well!

  5. Thank you SO much for sharing this list of Netflix movies. Like you, I don’t have cable and are always looking for new shows or movies to get into! I found you on the Peony Project and so glad I did!

  6. Everyone everywhere should watch Freaks and Geeks! 😉

We’ve been enjoying Bloodline and Kimmy Schmidt – two very unique shows!

  7. Oh Goodness! I LOVED Freaks and Geeks and just finished Binge watching Friends. Looks like I’ll have to check out these others now. Thanks for sharing!

  8. Okay I think we should become best friends because everything you like I like. Everything you suggest I’m like ‘YEAH!” I just finished my Netflix finds and have been on the hunt for new ones and all of these seem like something I would like! Great timing and thanks for sharing 🙂

  9. Welllll considering that the shows you listed in that first paragraph are pretty much our all time favorites (Parenthood, Friday Night Lights, Gilmore Girls, House of Cards, HIMYM, etc), I am super excited to check out these other ones! We always watch more tv in the winter when things get snowy and cold so these kind of recommendations are much appreciated 🙂

  10. Freaks and Geeks. Fav! Top of the Lake, way too creepy for me. Like THE FALL – also creepfest. NETFLIX FAVORITES – CIRCUS, SIX FEET UNDER, MADAME SECRETARY, BREAKING BAD, SCANDAL, HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER. Thanks for your list. 🙂

  11. Call the Midwife and Land Girls are two of my favorites. I’m obsessed with the 40’s-60’s. I even dress in the clothes. I can’t wait for the new season of Call the Midwife!
